The prophet (ﷺ) said: “It is incumbent upon you to be always truthful, for truthfulness guides to absolute piety and piety leads to Paradise. A man who always tells the truth and pursues the truth is written with Allah as a truthful one. Refrain from lying, for lying guides to sinfulness and sinfulness leads to Hellfire. A man continues to tell lies and pursues lies until he is written with Allah as a liar.” [Bukhari]
Whether a big lie or a small one, we as Muslims must refrain from it. We tend to forget the small lies and brush them off like they mean nothing when in fact they mean a lot to Allah. Let us remember what the prophet thought of someone who lied:
‘Aa’ishah said: No characteristic was more hateful to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) than lying. If a man told a lie in the presence of the Prophet (ﷺ), he would continue to feel some unrest in his heart until he knew that the man had repented. [Tirmidhi]
Allah knows best.
