77 branches of Imane [1-5]

The prophet () said: “Faith consists of sixty to seventy odd branches, the best of which is to declare there is no God but Allah and the least of which is to remove something harmful from the road, and modesty is a branch of faith.” [Bukhari]

Imam al Bayhaqi (a renowned scholar of hadith) compiled a list of 77 branches of imane – let us explore this list.

We must first distinguish between a Muslim and a believer. Imane is more inclusive than Islam; so every believer is a Muslim, but not every Muslim is a believer. Imane is more specific with regards to its people. It is broken down as:

Speech of the tongue, belief of the heart, and action of the limbs. It increases with obedience, and it decreases through sin.

1. Belief in Allah: This is the core of true imane – to testify that there is no entity worthy of worship except Allah. This is done through speech, belief in the heart and actions – without these, one is not a true believer.

“Indeed this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord (Allah), so worship Me.” 21:92

2. To believe that everything other than ALLAH was non-existent. Thereafter, Allah created these things and subsequently they came into existence: A true believer understands that the universe was not always here. It did not form itself. It was not a matter of chance that everything fell into place. It was designed and curated in every slight detail by Allah the almighty.

“And [in] the alternation of night and day and [in] what Allah sends down from the sky of provision and gives life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and [in His] directing of the winds are signs for a people who reason.” 45:5

“It is Allah who made for you the earth a place of settlement and the sky a ceiling and formed you and perfected your forms and provided you with good things. That is Allah, your Lord; then blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds.” 40:64

3. To believe in the existence of angels (Mala’ikah): True believers believe in the existence of angels; not as they are portrayed in modern society, but as a creation of Allah that do not have the free will that humans and jinn possess. They follow the commands of Allah without their own will.

4. To believe that the books sent to the prophets were true. However all the books are now invalid apart from the Qur’an: The various holy books sent by Allah to His prophets throughout history were valid in their time. They came with the same message as the Qur’an, but through the times they were slowly changed through various methods by the corrupted people until the basis of the word of Allah was no longer there. The Qur’an is the last remaining unchanged word of Allah.

5. To believe that all the prophets are true, but as the prophet Muhammad’s () ummah we are commanded to follow him alone: Allah Himself does not compare between His prophets. They were all His beloved creations who were sent with the same core message to the people which is to worship none other than Allah. We as believers must understand that they were all true prophets of Allah; we take lessons from their stories mentioned in the Qur’an but as an ummah we must follow the teachings of His last prophet Muhammad ().

“The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allah and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination.” 2:285

“And verily, We have sent among every Ummah (community, nation) a Messenger (proclaiming): “Worship Allah (Alone), and avoid (or keep away from) all false deities” Then of them were some whom Allah guided and of them were some upon whom the straying justified. So travel through the land and see what the end of those who denied (the truth) was.” 16:36

Spread the hadiths of the Prophet

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Narrated Abu Huraira: I said: “O Allah’s Apostle! Who will be the luckiest person, who will gain your intercession on the Day of Resurrection?”

Allah’s Apostle () said: O Abu Huraira! “I have thought that none will ask me about it before you as I know you’re longing for the (learning of) Hadiths. The luckiest person who will have my intercession on the Day of Resurrection will be the one who said sincerely from the bottom of his heart “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.”

And ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul ‘Aziz wrote to Abu Bakr bin Hazm, “Look for the knowledge of hadith and get it written, as I am afraid that religious knowledge will vanish and the religious learned men will pass away (die). Do not accept any (narration) other than the Hadiths of the Prophet (). Circulate knowledge and teach the ignorant, for knowledge does not vanish except when it is kept secretly (to oneself).” [Bukhari]

We see today that many of our Muslim brothers and sisters have abandoned the hadiths of the prophet (). Not only is this extinguishing the authenticity of many of his teachings but also opening doors to fabrication. Sects in our Ummah have fabricated their own hadith books and narrations on Islamic history, lying and deceiving people leading them to fall into bid’a (innovation in the deen).

Let us be of those who let the sunnah move forward – the authentic sunnah, narrated by our beloved companions keeping the actions of our role model Muhammad () alive in order for us to succeed. Let us spread his teachings even if it is to one person, starting with our own families.

Do not be forgetful

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Shaytan has been given the ability to make mankind forget about Allah. This does not necessarily mean that we permanently forget, but he makes us forget in the right moments. Allah says:

“Satan has overcome them and made them forget the remembrance of Allah . Those are the party of Satan. Unquestionably, the party of Satan – they will be the losers.” 58:19

We must be weary of the power of shaytan. We look around the world today, we see many have forgotten or more appropriately, have chosen to forget about Allah. We see people roam the world as if they will live forever and forget that one day they will meet their maker. Let us be of those who constantly remember Allah and the day we shall meet Him.

Be weary of lying

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

The prophet (ﷺ) said: “It is incumbent upon you to be always truthful, for truthfulness guides to absolute piety and piety leads to Paradise. A man who always tells the truth and pursues the truth is written with Allah as a truthful one. Refrain from lying, for lying guides to sinfulness and sinfulness leads to Hellfire. A man continues to tell lies and pursues lies until he is written with Allah as a liar.” [Bukhari]

Whether a big lie or a small one, we as Muslims must refrain from it. We tend to forget the small lies and brush them off like they mean nothing when in fact they mean a lot to Allah. Let us remember what the prophet thought of someone who lied:

‘Aa’ishah said: No characteristic was more hateful to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) than lying. If a man told a lie in the presence of the Prophet (ﷺ), he would continue to feel some unrest in his heart until he knew that the man had repented. [Tirmidhi]

The sleeping position we must avoid

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Ya’eesh ibn Tihfah al-Ghifaari reported that his father said: “I stayed as a guest with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) with those of the poor whom he hosted. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came out in the night to check up on his guests, and saw me lying on my stomach. He prodded me with his foot and said, ‘Do not lie in this manner, for it is a way of lying that Allah hates.’” [Tirmidhi]

Not only does Allah Himself prohibit this but recent studies have proven that sleeping on the stomach can cause various physical issues too:

  • It puts pressure on the spine causing a strain in the back and throughout the body as the spine holds most of the body’s nerves.
  • Since one must move the head to the side in order to breath while the body is facing down, sleeping on the stomach also puts strain on the neck. Over time this can cause permanent damage such as a herniated disk.
  • The organs of the abdomen will be pressurised by the weight of the body and spine thus pushing them against the heart and lungs giving the sleeper a slower heart rate. This causes fatigue making it even more difficult to get up and is also generally unhealthy for the circulatory system.
  • The digestive system will not be functioning properly either due to the weight of the body sitting on the area in which digestion takes place.

The Sunnah of the prophet (ﷺ) for sleeping is as follows:

“When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to retire to his bed, he would lie on his right side and then say, ‘O Allah, I surrender my soul to You and I turn my face to You and I entrust my affair to You and I seek Your support with hope and fear of You. There is no refuge from You but to You. I have believed in Your Book which You sent down and Your Prophet whom You sent.'” [Bukhari]

It is also mentioned:

“When the Prophet (ﷺ) went to bed at night, he would put his hand under his cheek, then say, ‘Allaahumma bismika amootu wa ahyaa (O Allah, in Your name I die and I live).’ Then when he woke up he would say, ‘Al-hamdu Lillaah alladhi ahyaanaa ba’da ma amaatanaa wa ilayhi al-nushoor (Praise be to Allah who has brought us back to life after causing us to die, and to Him is the resurrection).’” [Bukhari]

It has been proven that sleeping on the side is the healthiest position to avoid all the issues mentioned above. Furthermore, scholars have said that switching to the left side is also permissible; the position to avoid in lying on the stomach.

Miracle of Ayat ul Kursi

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Ayat ul Kursi is one of the most significant ayahs in the Qur’an. The prophet (ﷺ) said: “For everything there is a pinnacle and the pinnacle of the Qur’an is Surat Al-Baqarah, in it there is an Ayah which is the master of the Ayat in the Qur’an; [it is] Ayat Al-Kursi.” [Tirmidhi]

Let us explore the miracle behind this ayah for it has such a significance in Islam. First, let us look at the brief translation and listen to the recitation:

“Allah – there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.” 2:255
