بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
The prophet said: “The best of the Muslims is he from whose hand and tongue the Muslims are safe.” [Muslim]
This hadith teaches us to watch how we use our physical ability when it comes to our Muslim brothers and sisters. Physically hurting a Muslim is a major sin in Islam. It applies to the whole of humanity except in certain situations and is especially important within the ummah. It is not limited to disputes either; many of us act out violently over nothing whether this is our own families or other Muslims.
The prophet also mentioned the tongue – this includes using foul language; slander; backbiting; whatever undermines the values of another Muslim. The prophet said: “Whoever can guarantee [the chastity of] what is between his two jaw-bones [tongue] and what is between his two legs, I guarantee Paradise for him.” [Bukhari]
Let us be weary of how we treat each other; to remain one ummah is to spread the peace between one another, not hatred.
