Hands and speech

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

The prophet said: “The best of the Muslims is he from whose hand and tongue the Muslims are safe.” [Muslim]

This hadith teaches us to watch how we use our physical ability when it comes to our Muslim brothers and sisters. Physically hurting a Muslim is a major sin in Islam. It applies to the whole of humanity except in certain situations and is especially important within the ummah. It is not limited to disputes either; many of us act out violently over nothing whether this is our own families or other Muslims.

The prophet also mentioned the tongue – this includes using foul language; slander; backbiting; whatever undermines the values of another Muslim. The prophet said: “Whoever can guarantee [the chastity of] what is between his two jaw-bones [tongue] and what is between his two legs, I guarantee Paradise for him.” [Bukhari]

Let us be weary of how we treat each other; to remain one ummah is to spread the peace between one another, not hatred.

Allah will forgive you

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“Say, O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah . Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” 39:53

Let us never say that Allah will not forgive what we have done as it is going against Allah’s word. He has decreed upon Himself to forgive all wrongdoings, no matter how severe. Let us all repent today, as we are not promised tomorrow for if we pass it will be too late, as the next ayah mentions:

“And return [in repentance] to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you; then you will not be helped.” 39:54

Spread the hadiths of the Prophet

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Narrated Abu Huraira: I said: “O Allah’s Apostle! Who will be the luckiest person, who will gain your intercession on the Day of Resurrection?”

Allah’s Apostle () said: O Abu Huraira! “I have thought that none will ask me about it before you as I know you’re longing for the (learning of) Hadiths. The luckiest person who will have my intercession on the Day of Resurrection will be the one who said sincerely from the bottom of his heart “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah.”

And ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul ‘Aziz wrote to Abu Bakr bin Hazm, “Look for the knowledge of hadith and get it written, as I am afraid that religious knowledge will vanish and the religious learned men will pass away (die). Do not accept any (narration) other than the Hadiths of the Prophet (). Circulate knowledge and teach the ignorant, for knowledge does not vanish except when it is kept secretly (to oneself).” [Bukhari]

We see today that many of our Muslim brothers and sisters have abandoned the hadiths of the prophet (). Not only is this extinguishing the authenticity of many of his teachings but also opening doors to fabrication. Sects in our Ummah have fabricated their own hadith books and narrations on Islamic history, lying and deceiving people leading them to fall into bid’a (innovation in the deen).

Let us be of those who let the sunnah move forward – the authentic sunnah, narrated by our beloved companions keeping the actions of our role model Muhammad () alive in order for us to succeed. Let us spread his teachings even if it is to one person, starting with our own families.

Allah knows best.

Be weary of lying

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

The prophet (ﷺ) said: “It is incumbent upon you to be always truthful, for truthfulness guides to absolute piety and piety leads to Paradise. A man who always tells the truth and pursues the truth is written with Allah as a truthful one. Refrain from lying, for lying guides to sinfulness and sinfulness leads to Hellfire. A man continues to tell lies and pursues lies until he is written with Allah as a liar.” [Bukhari]

Whether a big lie or a small one, we as Muslims must refrain from it. We tend to forget the small lies and brush them off like they mean nothing when in fact they mean a lot to Allah. Let us remember what the prophet thought of someone who lied:

‘Aa’ishah said: No characteristic was more hateful to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) than lying. If a man told a lie in the presence of the Prophet (ﷺ), he would continue to feel some unrest in his heart until he knew that the man had repented. [Tirmidhi]

Spend your wealth

The prophet () said: “Spend, and do not count, lest Allah counts against you. Do not withhold your money, lest Allah withholds from you. Spend what you can.” [Bukhari].

Many of us hold back too much with our money and wealth, hoarding our money and depriving ourselves and the people around us of good that we know we can afford. Allah has given us wealth to spend in this world; every penny spent with good intentions on good things is obeying the commandments of Allah and if spent on others is considered a Sadaqah (charity in the way of Allah).

The prophet () said: “The Lord’s commandment for every one of His slaves is, ‘Spend on others, and I will spend on you’.” [Bukhari]

Ahmad narrated: “The prophet () saw me wearing old, tattered clothes, and asked me, ‘Do you have any wealth?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘What kind of wealth?’ I said, ‘All that Allah has given me of camels and sheep.’ He said, ‘Then show the generous blessings that He has given you.’ [Tirmidhi]

The prophet () also said: “Allah loves to see the effects of His blessing on His slave.” [Tirmidhi]

This is not to be confused with wasting or extravagance – we will discuss this in a future post if god wills.

Let us spend from our wealth, to the limits Allah has given us, and not withhold His blessing upon us.

“Let the rich man spend according to his means, and the man whose resources are restricted, let him spend according to what Allah has given him. Allah puts no burden on any person beyond what He has given him” [65:7]

Allah knows best.

Consistent good actions

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

The prophet () said: “The most beloved actions to Allah are those performed consistently, even if they are few.” [Bukhari]

This could even be reading a page or half a page of Qur’an before bed; praying an extra Sunnah prayer after Isha; any good deed that will bring up Allah’s love for us. Imagine the benefit that an extra 10 or so minutes of worship a day can bring us.
