Peace for eternity

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

What is real peace?

We look around and we see all sorts of different methods people use to find their own peace. Some people it’s meditation or yoga, others it’s classical music etc. We look at them in these moments and they look like they’ve found peace, but in reality these things are just the temporary calmness of emotions.

What Islam teaches us about peace is the opposite of fear, a constant source of putting our negative emotions in perspective. For many practices of peace people like to simply forget their reality, not face their problems. Why do many people drink/take drugs or drown themselves in music etc.? These things cloud our reality, make us not think about our problems.

The difference with Islam is that when one really has Imane (faith), there is no need to run from reality, it gives us the strength to face our issues in life. We can face reality and still be at peace. Other methods may give you temporary restfulness but nothing will satisfy the soul like the peace Allah will give inside of this deen. As he says:

“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah . Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.” [13:28]

May Allah open our hearts to His peace and keep us away from that which will cause us distress.

First 10 days of Dhul Hijjah

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Prophet () said: “There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” They said: “Not even jihad for the sake of Allah?” He said: “Not even jihad for the sake of Allah, unless a man goes out himself for jihad taking his wealth with him and does not come back with anything.” [Bukhari]

These first 10 days of the last month of the Hijri calendar mark the most blessed days in Islam. These are not to be confused with the most blessed nights which are the last 10 nights of Ramadan; these are the most blessed days.

Allah has given us these days to increase our good deeds. Whether it’s reading some more Qur’an, making more thikr (remembrance) and dua, giving charity, and more – they are all multiplied.

Let us make the most of these days, how ever much we can. How ever small a deed may seem, it will count a lot more in these days. Read a couple of verses extra a day, give that bit of extra change to charity, make thikr in those minutes of commuting or waiting in line at the store.

May Allah accept all our effort.

Be kind when buying and selling

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Here is a short reminder about the basic Islamic etiquette when dealing with purchases or sales, the Prophet () said: May Allah show mercy to a man who is kind when he sells, when he buys, and when he makes a claim. [Bukhari]

We see today that many transactions occur in such a bad manner especially in cases where prices are negotiable for an item or service. Our ego gets in the way – we find the buyer is extremely harsh and rude; the seller treats the buyer in such an ugly manner; the person claiming a refund or retrieving a loan from someone is very aggressive. The prophet () in this hadith made a dua, that the one who refrains from such negativity and deals with people kindly will be shown mercy by Allah – and let us not forget that his dua is always accepted.

Let us be of those who treat people with respect when buying or selling an item or service and let us be respectful when making claims even when we are in the right. The people we deal with not only see us as human beings, but also see us representing Islam. If we deal with others with bad manners it will push them away from our deen, Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Islam is a responsibility of us all, not only in our worship of Allah but also in our conduct. If our conduct is ugly, then how are we truly worshipping? The prophet () said:

“He who is deprived of kindness is deprived of goodness.” [Muslim]

O Aisha, Allah is gentle and He loves gentleness. He rewards for gentleness what is not granted for harshness and He does not reward anything else like it.” [Muslim]

Continuous gain even after passing away

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

We all know that once we pass away, there’s no turning back. Our actions will be set in place and will determine our fate forever. There are many ways we can benefit our after life even after we have left this world, here are a few:

  • Plant a tree: every time a person or an animal eats from it or sits in its shade, it is considered charity. Some trees live for 1000s of years.
  • Participate in building a mosque: the prophet () said: Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house like it in Paradise.” [Muslim] Anytime someone prays in the mosque, you will be given rewards.
  • Give a Qur’an to someone: taking this further would be to purchase a few copies and distribute them in mosques; anytime someone reads from it, you will be given rewards.
  • Donate a wheelchair to a hospital: each time a sick person uses it, you will be given rewards.
  • Advise others to do the same: for each person that carries out any of the good actions to tell them about, you will be given rewards alongside them.

May Allah grant us all ease in the afterlife.

Forgive those who do not believe

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Allah says in the Qur’an:

“Say, [O Muhammad], to those who have believed that they [should] forgive those who do not believe in the coming days of Allah so that He may recompense the people for what they used to do.

Whoever does good will benefit himself, and whoever does evil harms himself: then you will all be returned to your Lord.” [45:14-15]

Some people commit so much evil in this world and we forget through our hurt and anger that they will inevitably return back to their creator. Let us forgive them, for our sakes more than their’s, as we firstly can never be 100% certain of the state in which we will pass onto the next life – whether in a state of disbelief or not.

The people committing evil now, may pass away in a better state than us and whoever passes in a state of evil, will surely be pay for every small thing they have done.

May Allah assist Islam and all the Muslims of the world.

Be gentle

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Here is are two stories to show how gentle our prophet really was.

A man once confessed he was doomed because he slept with his wife while fasting in Ramadan, which is a major sin. The prophet () asked if he was able to free a slave. The man said no.

– Prophet () : “Can you fast two consecutive months?”

– Man: “No.”

– Prophet (): “Can you feed sixty poor people?”

– Man: “No.”

The prophet () stayed quiet. Soon, a basket of dates was presented to him. The prophet () took the dates, and looked for the man.

“Take these dates and give them in charity.”

The man said dejectedly, “No one is poorer than me, Messenger of Allah (). By Allah, there is no family in all of Madinah poorer than mine.”

At this, the Prophet’s ()  face broke into a smile.

“Take it and feed your family,” he said. [Bukhari]

Anas Ibn Malik narrated:

Whilst we were in the Mosque with the Messenger of Allah () a Bedouin came and stood urinating in the Mosque.

The Companions of the Messenger of Allah () said, ‘Stop it! Stop it!’ and were about to attack him, but the Messenger of Allah () said, ‘Do not interrupt him; leave him alone.’ So they left him until he had finished urinating.

Then the Messenger of Allah () called him and said to him, “In these Mosques it is not right to do anything like urinating or defecating; they are only for remembering Allah, praying and reading Qur’an” or words to that effect.

Then he commanded a man who was there to bring a bucket of water and throw it over the (urine), and he did so.” [Muslim]

How quick are we to get angry at people? How quick are we to react in a grave manner with people? How quick are we to punish others?

May Allah make us of those who are truly patient.
